20 Past 4 Michigan: Three Months of Work, Organized by Line
Three months of steady production for a family owned Michigan retailer in Jackson and Stockbridge, whose motto is Where Quality Meets Community: the full Time-Out pre-roll line, the house bag program worked through iteration after iteration and color after color, seasonal and holiday campaigns, video assets, and ongoing post content. Every finished file from that run is shown below, all 65 pieces, with Staff Picks in its own tab, every sticker for every house line gathered together in the Posts and Stickers tab, and the Cedar Heights and Pivot Point gummies packaging featured in its own tab so nothing gets buried.
The Time-Out pre-roll archive lives in this tab, all 11 pieces: every product shot in the run and the finished group shot that ties the line together. The three Time-Out circles that used to sit at the top of this tab now live over in the Posts and Stickers tab with every other sticker, since they are the lid stickers for the concentrate versions of the line.

Glacier Cannabis: The Website, Plus Years of Weekly Updates
Magic Plants built the Glacier Canna website around its frost forward identity, opening with the “Get Lost in the Frost!” homepage and carrying that look through the products portfolio, the strain library, and the merch shop. The build was only the start of the job. For years, a huge part of the weekly work was keeping the dispensary facing information current: Store Locator updates as new retailers across Michigan stocked Glacier products, Fresh Drops updates as new products landed in stores, and Weekly Menu updates for the menus offered to dispensaries, so what a store showed its customers always matched what Glacier actually had available.

The coding side of Magic Plants builds in public. Several of my own tools and projects live on my GitHub, released open source so other developers and businesses can use them, study them, and build on them. The featured project is the Web Image Crawler, a recursive web image crawler and archive manager with a desktop GUI and a command line version: domain lock so a crawl stays on the right site, highest resolution image picking from lazy-load and srcset sources, Playwright rendering for JavaScript heavy sites, and ZIP archives organized by page.

The Igloo Cannabis Store (Big Rapids, MI): April 2025 to May 2026
Website, Brand Assets, Promo Videos, Marketing Strategy & More: Igloo Built from the Ground Up
As the previous Creative Director for Glacier's brand new brick-and-mortar dispensary from 2025 to May 2026 in Big Rapids, Michigan it was up to me to handle every aspect of The Igloo Cannabis digital launch, from concept to execution. This was a MASSIVE undertaking that I did not take lightly and thankfully was a resoundingly huge success!
I designed the website to reflect Glacier's signature frost-forward aesthetic and created all the product stock images, wrote the full suite of product descriptions (with cross promotions and upsells to other items), and populated the Dutchie menu to support pickup, delivery, and in-store orders.
From 3D renders of products to mylar dieline designs to VFX video promotions and more. I handled several key factors in launching this new dispo. I also built a fully integrated rewards program that unifies cannabis purchases while shopping and discounts into one seamless system. On top of that, I manage the ongoing SEO strategy and newsletter campaigns (including integrations like Mailchimp, SpringBig, and more) to keep customers engaged and coming back.
Every touchpoint was crafted with intention to bring The Igloo and Glacier's products to life, online and in store, from the perspective of the cannabis connoisseur to the brand new toker. Visit the website at igloocannabis.com to see the clear difference.

From March 2023 to May 2026 we were heavily involved in the creation their website, apps, packaging designs for different strains, advertising media in-store and online, magazine ads, promo videos, newsletter, loyalty program, merch designs, and so much more.
We also spearheaded their onboarding to Weedmaps, Dutchie, and Leafly. I also write email blasts, product descriptions, research market data, and other tasks involving processing analytics. Proud to have collaborated with dispensaries all across Michigan helping GC with their tasks.

We created CANNOPOLY (REEFOPOLY) for The REEF dispensary! $100,000 grand prize or a Lifetime Supply of Weed* among other surprises! The game features physical cards with scratch-off codes that you enter on the custom web app, after you first register an account and login. From the programming to creating the physical game cards to all the graphics and more.

Michigrown Pheno Flight Project: 2022 Pheno Hunt
I created the first website for Michigrown and the digital side of their Pheno Flight 2022 phenotype hunt. We also created QR codes that were placed on 10 gram packs: 1 strain with 3 phenotypes, available in nearly 100 dispensaries all over Michigan.
Once the phenotype was selected of the three choices, the customer could login to the web app filling out a digital scorecard, ranking their favorite of the three phenotypes. With hundreds of participants, we used that data to inform Michigrown of the best phenotypes of the strains and their effects that the customer selected.
The app was very robust: You could rank the flower by Taste, Effects, Bag Appeal, and so much more. Using this data was extremely useful in selecting their next plants to go to market. Extremely exciting and next level for cannabis.

Another collaboration between Michigrown and Magic Plants! They needed an update to the website we created for them so they could showcase their MediPak project for Veterans, where any veteran can get 2 free pre-rolls per day at any High Society location! A sticky header, a custom store locator for just the High Society shops with the promotion, and so much more had to be done right and quickly!

Daily Deals for The Reef (Custom WordPress Plugin)
The Reef needed a Daily Deals plugin that could rotate a promotional image that explained the deals for day but rotated automatically day-to-day. They wanted an admin panel where staff could login and set each deals flyer for the week and it would keep rotating from the beginning if it wasn't changed as well.
Thankfully a plugin already existed that could rotate the deals every day HOWEVER it only worked for a single entity. There was no way to put the deals for Detroit and then for the Muskegon Heights location. So I duplicated the plugin and namespaces inside the code, rewriting some of it to accommodate a second-instance. Works great!
I made various upgrades to their websites including creating custom plugins, apps, and graphics.

Having made my own websites and software professionally since 2005, I knew that starting a Michigan-centered media company specifically for marijuana would be a hit. Joe Montgomery is the Owner of Magic Plants Creative Agency from Spring Lake, Michigan and serves as the Director of Digital Production & Technology, leveraging nearly two decades of experience to bridge the gap between creative vision and technical execution.
Why Plants? Back in 2005 I first called the company “Frequency Software” and then when the medical cannabis industry started here in Michigan in 2010, I created a Cannabis service sub-brand called “Magic Plants”. They essentially operate identically with Magic Plants handling the cannabis niche and Frequency Software (WJNM Global) handling the other niches.

I am Joe Montgomery, and Magic Plants is not an agency with a sales team. It is me: a hard worker with over 20 years of professional experience who learned every trade on this page by doing it for real clients, and who treats every project as if it were my own business on the line, because my clients' success is how this business pays the rent.
I started making websites and software professionally in 2005 as Frequency Software. When Michigan's medical cannabis industry began in 2010, I built Magic Plants as the cannabis-focused brand, including the first explicitly for growing cannabis soil mix sold on Michigan store shelves. I have been a proponent of cannabis for over 25 years, and that native understanding of the plant, the products, and the regulations is something very few professional creatives can offer.
Since then the work has compounded: pioneering 3D design since 2013, three years as Creative Director and Marketing Manager for Glacier Cannabis, building The Igloo Cannabis Store from the ground up as Creative Director, a monopoly-style game for The Reef that made the Detroit Metro Times, a pheno hunt app used in nearly 100 Michigan dispensaries, and custom apps and sites for clients from electricians to school districts.
The point of all of it is simple: whatever your business needs to grow (a website, packaging that moves product, a video that stops the scroll, an app that replaces chaos, a catalog that stays updated, a newsletter that brings people back), there is a very good chance I have already done it, done it well, and can do it for you without you hiring and managing five different people.
